BASF Design Tools

Abstracted Solutions to

Inspire Appliance Designers

BASF tasked us with creating a series of design tools that highlight innovative uses of BASF materials for appliance manufacturing. These interactive prototypes had to remain abstract enough to spark creative thinking—focusing on material properties rather than traditional shapes—while still referencing common appliances like refrigerator handles or washing machine doors.

My Role (Project Lead + Product Management + Execution)

Vision & Requirements Setting

Translated BASF’s broad aspiration (“inspire appliance designers”) into actionable specs: integrated lighting, minimal visible UI, easy handling, and emphasis on material showcasing.

Scoped out the project timeline, budget, and deliverables to ensure alignment with BASF’s marketing events.

End-to-End Development

Led all aspects of design and build, including electronics, UI/UX considerations, and mechanical functionality.

Partnered with a freelance industrial designer for final aesthetics, ensuring the tools balanced form and function.

Rapid Prototyping & Testing

Created quick prototypes to validate lighting behavior, material fit, and user interaction.

Iteratively refined each tool based on client feedback, incorporating updates to materials, LEDs, and overall device ergonomics.

Delivery & Impact

Delivered five interactive design tools that illuminated BASF’s materials in compelling, user-focused ways—no visible screens or extraneous tech.

Received positive feedback from both BASF and industry professionals, positioning these tools as a standout asset for inspiring designers at trade shows and client visits.
